Basic course in glacier walking in Jostedalen, Norway

This course will provide you with knowledge about glaciers, their surrounding nature, and how to safely negotiate them. A large part of the time will be devoted to practical exercises involving the rescue of fellow participants from crevasses in either snow covered or blank glaciers. No previous experience of glaciers is required. We will learn how to use the crampon, iceaxe, rope and safety gear in the right way.

Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier on the European mainland. It consists of a plateau that is 80 km long and from which a large number of smaller glaciers extend into the valleys below. This allows us the opportunity to traverse glaciers that vary in terms of degree of difficulty and size. Jostedalsbreen is a unique landscape with both easy and difficult glaciers.

We will be staying the night in a house equipped with a communal kitchen, living room and multi-bedroom. The participants will buy and prepare the food themselves during the week. There is a shop in the valley for this purpose.
